An Introduction to Turkey

This web site is an introduction to help you discover the many dimensions of Turkey, to grasp the splendours  of the country's past and its cultural wealth, to understand the achievements and problems modern Turkey and the connection between her past and the present. It is not the kind of travel hook where you will find descriptions of places and information to help you plan your trip to Turkey. Nor does it pretend to be a web site offering a detailed study of the history and culture of the country.

Turkey, a bridge between Europe and Asia, has an extremely rich cultural heritage. Perhaps no other land has witnessed so many diverse civilisations over the last nine thousand years.

After the great Mesopotamians, the Hittite and Urartu kingdoms flourished, and in Western Anatolia the Ionian and Roman civilisations predominated. Istanbul holds the honour of having been the capital of two huge empires  first the Byzantine then the Ottoman. Anatolia itself became a crossroads of peoples, cultures and religions. Christianity, for example, thrived here, and Islam was glorified by the Seljuks and Ottomans.

Turkey today still holds a very strategic position on the world map. This vast land of 67.8 million people has tackled the challenges of the future through its journey along the road towards modernisation, secularism and democracy. Today, it has a vibrant society, a dynamic economy, an active political lire and great confidence in its future.

A visit to Turkey should not only take in all the great sights and monuments; it should leave plenty of time for leisure and pleasure. Turkey offers immense resources in these areas: Majestic mountains ideal for climbers, bikers and skiers; over 7,800 km of coastline laced with picturesque bays and coves; lakes; year-round summer in some areas; yet plenty of snow in others; a solid and expanding tourism infrastructure; one or the world's healthiest cuisines and an extremely hospitable people.

A trip to Turkey is an enchanting experience and an unforgettable adventure. We hope this web-site encourages you to come. Even if you can't, we hope that by reading the text and looking at the photographs you will have a better idea of Turkey and what she represents.

Turkey is like a mosaic made up or many different reliefs and formations: parallel mountain ranges, extinct volcanoes, plateaus fissured by valleys and plains. Surrounded on its three sides by warm seas, it rails in the temperate climate zone. The climate varies considerably however from region to region: a temperate climate in the Black Sea Region, a Mediterranean climate on the southern coast and the Aegean, a continental and arid climate on the central plateau and a harsh mountain climate in eastern Turkey. Because of these variations in climate, the fauna and flora are some of the richest in Europe and the Middle East.

Merhaba Tugrul Sokamen,

Thank you for your holiday greeting. I have been meaning to send a  "thank you" message and this is the perfect opportunity to do so On Friday, 23 May, 2008 we were visiting Kusadasi while on an Oceania  Cruises ship. We had pre-booked a full day Ephesus tour with your  agency. Our tour guide for the day was Tan. We want you to know that  the tour was truly excellent. You provided everything you promised and  more. Our guide Tan really made it a memorable day. He was articulate,  and affable. His knowledge of all the sites was  impressive. But the  best part was the discussions we had with Tan about modern Turkey, its  culture and people. He was an ambassador of good will. At the end of  the day we were sorry to say good bye to a Turkish friend. Thank you  for providing a treasured highlight of our trip to your wonderful  country.

Also, would you please convey our thanks and personal best wishes to Tan?

Sincerely,

John and Mary Penny

From the moment that we comunicated with Melih by email, the service that he prvided was EXCELENT. We enjoyed our stay in Pine Bay Hotel Resort, our son just love the pool, food and entertainment at night.

From the moment that he picked us up until the moment that he droped us to the airport it was an excelent and personalize service.

Dear Melih Bey,

Everything was great, except for the fact that it would have been much better if the services were "ultra all inclusive", my only negative feedback being bewerages which were local, and that's all. The rest was as I said, was great and I refere here to the accomodation, the food, the services provided both by ADAKULE and by yr Company.

I was in Kusadasi for the 5th time, and each time, surprisingly, i found something new in your beautiful city/country.

As discussed with you, hopefully next year, with your kind cooperation and help, we'll spend our vacation in Antalya/Belek Area, but this time ultra all inclusive and not in a big hotel (like  Adakule), but in an Summer Resort (5 stars of course), with wider green areas and the rooms in small bungalows (or villas), and I am sure that you will find something suitable for us.

Again many thanks for your kind cooperation and hoping that from now, on you will consider us  as your friend, let's keep in touch

best regards

September 2007

Traveling with 3 friends to Ephesus on a cruise, I reviewed the options that the cruise company had and thought to check with a friend from Kusadasi on what sites to see.  We were concerned that much of the time on the cruise tour would be spent waiting for things to happen and standing around getting off and on the bus.  My friend Mert recommended several places, and upon reviewing a few websites, I saw that Kusadasi.biz had a full-day tour that would cover each of them.  After a quick email exchange with Mr Ozsoy, we settled on the time and the date of my arrival and the itinerary with a private guide.

I got off the boat a few minutes ahead of my friends just so I could find the guide.  Our guide was Emre and held a sign with my name right at the front as I cleared the secured area.  Emre was incredibly polite and quickly signaled the driver of our spacious van once my friends arrived.  We spent a some time getting to know each other on the way to our first stop and from here, he set priorities and followed our cues about when to move on from a site.

Emre’s English was very clear and he never had to repeat himself because of lack of understanding on our part.  He gave us the time we needed at the various sights and then got us back on the van to our next destination.

Since lunch was included in price, we were worried that we might be getting something worse than airline food in the US, but Emre took us to a nice outdoor eatery with only native diners when we arrived.  He ordered for us after checking for preference and we enjoyed our simple Turkish lunch.

Beyond the sights we had chosen, Emre suggested a couple of local craft centers with pottery and carpets.  We took a tour of a carpet co-op and listened when the dealer showed us his wares.  There was not any pressure for us to buy, so when we told Emre we wanted to go, we were back on the bus just like any other stop.

At the end of the day, we were quite pleased with the value and the attention we got from our tour package.  Our guide was well informed, polite and amusing.  He made us feel very welcome in Kusadasi and we can recommend him and kusadasi.biz with our highest praise.

Dear Sir,

Please receive all my sincerelly thanks for your really and operative help in order to have a verry nice holliday in Kusadasi,of course specially to Mr Melih Ozsoy, who is really a verry nice person and cooperative one.

In what is concerning the conditions of the hotel generally speaking is ok.The room, the personal, the people and of course the price. We have to forget the small impediments which were solved prompt by the personal.

As a observation, not for the agency, but for the hotel owners is that is situated far from the beach, but with a dolmus 2 times per day  they will have better conditions.

In rest everything is ok.

Thank you once again.

Dr Melih

I would like to take this oportunity to thank you for the service provided by yourselves during our recent holiday to Kusadasi.

This is the first time we have booked tranport using the internet and what a good idea it turned out to be.

We were met at the airport by your driver who I must say considering it was 01.00am in the morning greeted us with a welcoming smile. Our hotel was approx 2hrs from the airport we were dropped of at the doorstep no problems at all.

Hope to be speaking to you again soon.

Thanks again

The Collins and Treharne families

Mr Melih Ozsoy provides a very efficient, professional and reliable taxi/transfer service.

We had the pleasure of using his services recently and found it to be faultless.

Both drivers were extremely helpful, pleasant and VERY reliable.

The price of the service was the best we have ever been quoted, making it very good value for money.

We would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Ozsoy’s taxi/transfer services to anyone and hope to use his services again in the future and recommend his service to all our friends.

Thank you very much Melih.

Dear Melih,

Thank you for your letter, and I am so sorry but I was so bussy to feedback. Me and my daughter was satisfied our holiday which was provided  by yours.

I hope that next year me and my family will use your services.

Thank you for all, again

Best regards,

This testimonial also is reviewed in Trip Advisor Hotel Reviews. Please chek out the link given above.

So, I decided to write a review as I consider this site very useful for the travelers all over the world. The first thing when I decided to go to Turkey was to read the reviews of everybody who was at the Surmeli Hotel. I can say that most of the things said up till now are close to the real truth. I will also point my opinions with regards to the services and management of this hotel:

Minuses:

-the swimming pools are 90% full starting 9 o’clock; but the stupid thing is that is not full of people, is full of towels (?!). So if you arrive at the main swimming pool at 9.10 you do not have any available deck chairs. They should forbid this “style” of leaving the towels with “subliminal” message – “this chair is taken”
-the English of the Surmeli staff is more than bad; to be more specific, if you order at Room Service they hardly understand the items mentioned on the menu; to ask for details such as “I want more ….. or … no …. " or … any other words or complicated sentences is more than an adventure .. :). Even some of the waiters in the main restaurants get confused if you use sentences instead of simple words: water, coke etc.
-I was in a group of 4 families and 2 of them had the surprise to have 100 EUR respective 50 EUR missing from their rooms early on the second day of stay in the hotel.
- No beverages in the mini bar, fact that surprised me. It seems to me fair to have the beverages even if you have to pay for them, but at least to have something in that fridge to feel like you are at a 5 stars hotel.
-During the 7 nights that I have been there we’ve had a lot of food but the daily food variety is very small – meaning that the food is more or less the same everyday in the main restaurant

Pluses:

-all rooms have sea view – but the best sea view is on the right side of the exit from the elevator each floor
-the food is very fresh
-the swimming pool restaurant food is really great
-the rooms service food is very good
-most of the sweets are very tasty
-the staff of the hotel is very helpful and supportive but ... sometimes they do not understand exactly what you want/need because of their lack of ..English but they really strive :)
- the swimming polls are very clean and well maintained

Advices:

-ask for a safe from the first day of your stay to put your money inside
-the exchange rate at the hotel is quite good 1 EUR = 1.65 YTL. The nearest exchange office is in Kusadasi Bazaar and the rate is 1 EUR = 1.70 – 1.75 YTL. So, doesn’t worth to drive 20 km just for this difference.
-At lunch eat on the swimming pool restaurant – the food is much better than inside even if you do not have so many choices but is more tasty what you can eat there. Also, you can have the lunch up till 5 PM. At the main restaurant inside the hotel, finishes the lunch at 2 PM.
-Don’t buy souvenirs from the shops inside the hotel – you will find prices 3 times more expensive that in the Kusadasi Bazaar
-If you want to buy gold, you can try the shop inside the hotel. If you are a good negotiator, you can get the same prices from the Kusadasi Bazaar.

Last but not least, I can recommend you a very good and serious travel agency in Turkey - Kusadasi Tours represented by Mr. Melih Oszoy; he was very supportive and kind with us. He is answering any hour and he is solving any problem related to your stay in Turkey. Also the tariffs of this agency are far better from the others.

N.B. I promise to add some photos as soon as I will have it ready :)
